The University College student population has increased tremendously in the last few years. This has strained the available accommodation space for students within the University College. As a result, priority for accommodation will be given to first year first semester students. World over, it has been recognized that the youth are facing unique challenges in the era of our times. It is in this regard that the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) has come to the hope of the youth worldwide. Recently, the Principal of the Co-operative University College of Kenya, Prof. Douglas Shitanda was a key speaker at the 2015 IYF world culture camp in Korea that took place from 5TH TO 16TH JULY 2015. Prof. Shitanda was appointed a member of the International IYF advisory committee at the same event. In the ‘2015 IYF world camp and 3rd world education leaders forum’ in Korea , CUCK got into preliminary MoUs to collaborate with Gulu University (Uganda), Uganda Martyrs University/ Uganda, Mongolian University of Humanities Darkhan branch /Mongolia, The higher Institute of electrical engineering/ Burkina Faso and Mahanaim Educational Institute (college) run by IYF Worldwide. It is indeed wonderful for me to be here to embrace the International Youth Fellowship’s idea of bringing world leaders together from diverse cultures and all over the Globe with the sole objective of enhancing the interest of the youth and nurturing their spiritual growth. This being my first time in Korea, I say thank you to IYF and the people of the Republic of Korea for the tremendous support received.I stand here today as the Principal of The Co-operative University College of Kenya. The University College was established under Legal Order 161 of 4th November 2011 as a Constituent College of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with the sole mandate of being a leading institution in Co-operative Education, Training, Research and Consultancy. At this point in time, the institution awaits the award of Charter to attain full University status. The institution is situated on the outskirts of Nairobi city and close to the famous Nairobi National park. I welcome you ALL to tour Kenya and enjoy the wildlife warmth.With over 18,000 registered Co-operative enterprises commanding over 10 Million memberships with over US$4 million in deposits, Kenya has a huge advantage in job creation, products development, industrial attachment, and industrialization among others through co-operative ventures.For me, this forum would not have come at a better time than it is today when the youth agenda is vital among the leaders of the World. As the World thinks about the youth, I challenge them to think more about themselves today, tomorrow and in the future. The government of Kenya has taken the youth agenda seriously by allocating Millions of US$ for Youth Fund and by guaranteeing allocation of 30% of all Government procurement budget for youth, women and people with physical challenges.As an institution of higher learning, we have a great responsibility to mould the youth through teaching, training, research and consultancy, thus enabling them to become innovators, entrepreneurs, managers, leaders and dependable citizens. The youth therefore have a golden opportunity to transform the World and improve their livelihoods for a better tomorrow.The youth should therefore not shy away from leadership and since the world leaderships are becoming friendlier to the youth than ever before. They should therefore focus their energies on this competitive advantage and run with it. The youth should be well aware of the challenges facing the World today including climate change so as to ensure their own children have a world to inherit.It is quite unfortunate that each day about 3,000 youths all over the world get newly infected with HIV/AIDS. The youth have the power to change these statistics to zero.Worldwide, over 73 million youths are unemployed. Your actions and voice towards this are critical. If the youth lived beyond the technology age, still the 73 million-digit can be reduced to zero. The youth do not need any special preparation to change the world or the order of things. They just need themselves and their vision. The youth have a challenge to free the World from slavery, discrimination, gender incongruence, recklessness and vanity of vanity among others.Education is a vital component for the youth of all nations. One writer, Dr. Ben Carson, in his book, The Gifted Hands, asserts that education is the greatest equalizer. He further notes that education makes the poorest of the poor to dine with the kings and queens of the World. Were it not for education, then we all could not be in this forum today.As a University College, we therefore take our responsibility to educate, disseminate knowledge, do research and carry out industrial based consultancy very seriously. We at the same time allow the youth take the central role in our mandate thus making a significant contribution to the growth of the Nation and the World at large.To support the course of the youth, my University College has impact on three major projects namely;• Modern Learning Resource Centre• Information Technology Upgrade• Institute of Co-operative DevelopmentI have details on the same for your information. The Co-operative University College of Kenya’s participation in this year’s International Co-operatives Day was at its peak with the varsity choir being atop of the entertainers. The team from the university was led by Dep. Principal AA Prof. Kamau Ngamau and director of Institute for Co-operative Development, Research and Extension Prof. E.N. Gicheru. This year’s theme is, Choose co-operatives, choose equality. The day was marked at Uhuru park grounds in Nairobi. The Chief Guest was the cabinet secretary ministry of industrialization and enterprise development Adan Mohamed. The co-operative movement in Kenya is the most vibrant in Africa and 7th best in the World, mobilising well over 30% of our GDP. It is in this recognition that last year in November, the Alliance Africa held its 11th Regional Assembly in Nairobi. The forum brought together members of the Alliance Africa, government representatives, development partners, researchers and practitioners in the co-operative sector. The focus was on the emerging business trends and how Co-operatives across the continent can respond to the changing business environment guided by the pillars of the ICA Blue Print for a Co-operative Decade 2010-2020. The co-operative way of doing business has been proven to be better and brings a more effective balance to the global economy.

The Co-operative University College of Kenya is hosting its first ever international conference on co-operative business. The theme of the conference is “Entrepreneurship and Technology for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development”. This is a forum for interdisciplinary interactions among academia, researchers, Policy makers, Government and business leaders to exchange ideas with a view to finding suitable solutions to some of the challenges facing the society, private and public organizations. The 3-day (17th-19th June 2015) event was officially opened by the CS MoIE&D, represented by commissioner of co-operatives Mr. Patrick Musyimi saw the university launch their first journal; African Journal on Co-operative Development and Technology. Other keynote speakers at the conference on the first day include: CEO KENAFF, Dr. John Mutunga, promoting agribusiness for food security in Kenya Commissioner of Co-operatives Mr. Patrick Musyimi, The role of co-operative movement in enterprise ventures CEO KUSSCO Mr. George Ototo, innovations in Saccos Chairman Transition authority, Mr. Kinuthia WaMwangi, Devolution and Development, does it work? CUCK’s 1st International Conference on Co-operative Business is a unique and historic event not only in Kenya which is a leader in Africa in terms of co-operative development and 7th best in the world. Co-operative enterprises are very important to global economic development. Kenya’s long history of Co-operative development is characterized by strong growth, thus making a significant contribution to the overall economy. Co-operatives are recognized by the government to be a major contributor to national development, as co-operatives are found in almost all sectors of the economy.

CUCK students are set to benefit from an accommodation financing deal got into by the University and Jamii Bora Bank. The two institutions got into a pact that will Facilitate & provide financing to investors willing to offer land and construct hostels near to and around the University; this comes as The Co-operative University College of Kenya is bustling with high student enrolment and further set to increase as the demand for the University education keeps on growing in the country. Further, as the University College is set to become a fully fledged University, the demand for students’ accommodation is set to be high and therefore there is need to avert any eventuality of students’ accommodation crises. Speaking during the signing ceremony held on Friday 15th may, 2015 at the University’s main campus in Karen, the CUCK Principal Prof. Douglas Shitanda noted that with the demand of the Co-operative professionals in the country, the University needed more investors to put up accommodation facilities in the nearby areas of Karen, Ongata Rongai and Gataka to cater for the increased students’ population. The Principal lauded the Jamii Bora bank for the step in financing the project. The Jamii Bora Bank is set to Offer financing directly to the investors for the construction of students hostels as approved by the university and the county authorities and further ensure the private investors comply with all laid down construction procedures and requirements. The Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Timothy Kabiru expressed his optimism that this project will enhance the University to cater for its growing number of students the financial sector in the country much needed.  

The 3-day 13th Kenyan Universites’ Ehhibition organized by the Commission for University Education (CUE) kicks off at the Kenyatta stadium in Machakos. The Co-operative University College of Kenya takes the participation cue led by the Deputy Principal AA Prof. Kamau Ngamau and ICDRE Director Prof. E. N. Gicheru. The flagship exhibition items are the courses offered from Certificate level to degree level and the most successful E-learning mode offered by CUCK. Also, the Shirika Water Entreprenuaral model is notably in the Exhibition cue. Earlier today the Chief Guest Dr. Florence Muli Musime, the Chancellor, Daystar University and the CEO of CUE Prof. David Some visited the CUCK stand at the expo. The exhibition ends on Saturday 21st March, 2015.

The Co-operative University College of Kenya is a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. The university college has branches in Meru, Nairobi and Mombasa. Currently the campus at Meru is housed at JEDI USHIRIKA PLAZA opposite Hotel Westwind at Makutano on the Meru- Maua road. The university college offers degree, diploma and certificate courses in the following areas; cooperative business, business administration, community development, disaster management, finance and investment, marketing, human resource, supply chain management among others. The Co-operative University College of Kenya has awarded certificates to women participants who had taken part in a capacity training programme at the Co-operative University College in Nairobi in December last year. The women who were drawn from all the Sub Counties were taught on table banking, cooperate management among other skills. This is part of the County Government’s broad plan of empowering women at the grassroots with the necessary knowledge to enable them take part in economically viable activities. Speaking during the ceremony that took place at the Kisii Cultural Center, on 27th January 2015, Governor Ongwae thanked Prof. Gicheru, Director of CUCK’s ICDRE, for the curriculum that he said had been prepared specifically to meet the needs of the women groups’ leaders. The women were urged to sensitize their members on the available business opportunities and encourage them to engage in activities that will empower them economically. The County Commissioner thanked the women leaders for their continued support to various peace initiatives and for being peace agents in society. Governor Ongwae also noted that the Government will offer more training opportunities for women as they play a key role in development of the society.

Certificates are ready for collection from the examination office during working hours for last year’s graduands. Students should clear with the various  departments of the University College and avail the  clearance form and the university college  ID to the examinations office. National ID will also be required for full identification. Students who will not have collected their certificates within 6 months will be charged storage fee. Students should strictly adhere to these instructions.

All students were scheduled to end this semester exams on Wednesday 17th December, 2014. I am therefore releasing the following information: I wish to thank all of you for your co-operation and support that has facilitated a smooth and successful semester. As ambassadors of this university college you are requested to participate in marketing the institution for the January 2015 intake that is on-going. Finishing CCA courses are reminded to apply for the January 2015 intake. You will be expected to clear from the hostels on Friday 18th December, 2014 by 9.00am. Surrender hostel keys on or before 19th August, 2014. Failure to surrender hostel keys will attract a surcharge of Kshs. 500/= payable before all other dues. Confirm the fees for next trimester from the finance department. Clear all outstanding fees arrears on or before the opening date. Next semester will be starting on Thursday 8th January, 2015. Lectures will commence on Wednesday 12th January, 2015 for those who will have paid at least 50% of the tuition fees.
