Programme Overview

The PhD in IS curriculum is designed with technology agility in mind due to the 4th industrial revolution. The curriculum is therefore designed to cultivate an agile mindset in students to enable them to be innovative and creative so as to be able to respond to change in the uncertain and turbulent technological environment that characterizes modern information systems. The courses are designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving strategies so as to facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills that can enable them to identify uncertainties and figure out how to adapt as they go.

Justification of the need for the programme

As information systems permeate every facet of life, enterprises endeavour to reengineer their business processes to align themselves with the digitization reality in the wake of the 4th industrial revolution (4IR). This phenomenon results in an ever-increasing digital skill gap that calls for continuous retraining of the workforce.

Overall Goal of the Programme

The aim of the PhD in Information Systems for Digital Transformation curriculum is to produce graduates with the knowledge and skills to conduct information systems research and take on appropriate information system management positions.

The mode of delivery of the program will be Blended learning including face-to-face and online learning modes.

  • Be a holder of a Master’s Degree in a computing field from CUK or its equivalent from a recognized institution/university.
  • OR Completion of KNQF level 9.

The medium of instruction will be the English language.

Rationale of the Programme

The Msc.Data Science curriculum draws upon social sciences, computer science, mathematical sciences, statistics, management, and law. Students use the latest tools and analytical methods to work with data at scale, derive insights from complex and unstructured data, and solve real-world problems.

Admission Requirements

Must be a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Information Technology/Mathematical Sciences (with adequate computing units) or a related discipline with at least:

  1. Upper second class honors degree or cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 on a scale of 4.00; or
  2. Lower Second Class Honors or cumulative GPA of 2.50 on a scale of 4.00 with additional relevant training, evidence of research capacity through research, presentations or peer-reviewed publications and relevant working experience of two years.

Rationale of the Programme

The need for the programme was verified by carrying out a survey from consumers and potential consumers who interact with current graduates. The sampled respondents indicated that there is a clear need for Statistical Computing experts for research, consultancy and other sectors of the economy.
