Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Studies

Rationale of the Programme

Needs assessment/market survey/situation analysis.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Tourism Studies is expected to generate new knowledge that will aid the tourism industry’s transformative agenda. The programme will also give practical meaning to the hands on training in tourism and fill the knowledge gap that currently exist in the industry. A substantial amount of time and resources will be devoted to field studies and seminars in order to strengthen these components of the programme, especially at this level where students have to demonstrate the capacity to undertake independent work. The programme will encourage interdisciplinary work and many research projects.

This three-year programme opens the learner to various possibilities within the tourism sector. As the tourism industry embraces the transformative agenda towards 2030, the programme answers to the training gaps and addresses it through offering a balanced approach of cognitive, managerial, experiential and theoretical learning to enable the learner to not only fit into what exists in the market but become creative, innovative in developing a progressive agenda for the tourism industry in present times. The programme therefore endeavours to produce a tourism researcher capable of interpreting the ever dynamic world of tourism and making the sector competitive.
