World over, it has been recognized that the youth are facing unique challenges in the era of our times. It is in this regard that the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) has come to the hope of the youth worldwide. Recently, the Principal of the Co-operative University College of Kenya, Prof. Douglas Shitanda was a key speaker at the 2015 IYF world culture camp in Korea that took place from 5TH TO 16TH JULY 2015. Prof. Shitanda was appointed a member of the International IYF advisory committee at the same event. In the ‘2015 IYF world camp and 3rd world education leaders forum’ in Korea , CUCK got into preliminary MoUs to collaborate with Gulu University (Uganda), Uganda Martyrs University/ Uganda, Mongolian University of Humanities Darkhan branch /Mongolia, The higher Institute of electrical engineering/ Burkina Faso and Mahanaim Educational Institute (college) run by IYF Worldwide. It is indeed wonderful for me to be here to embrace the International Youth Fellowship’s idea of bringing world leaders together from diverse cultures and all over the Globe with the sole objective of enhancing the interest of the youth and nurturing their spiritual growth. This being my first time in Korea, I say thank you to IYF and the people of the Republic of Korea for the tremendous support received.I stand here today as the Principal of The Co-operative University College of Kenya. The University College was established under Legal Order 161 of 4th November 2011 as a Constituent College of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with the sole mandate of being a leading institution in Co-operative Education, Training, Research and Consultancy. At this point in time, the institution awaits the award of Charter to attain full University status. The institution is situated on the outskirts of Nairobi city and close to the famous Nairobi National park. I welcome you ALL to tour Kenya and enjoy the wildlife warmth.With over 18,000 registered Co-operative enterprises commanding over 10 Million memberships with over US$4 million in deposits, Kenya has a huge advantage in job creation, products development, industrial attachment, and industrialization among others through co-operative ventures.For me, this forum would not have come at a better time than it is today when the youth agenda is vital among the leaders of the World. As the World thinks about the youth, I challenge them to think more about themselves today, tomorrow and in the future. The government of Kenya has taken the youth agenda seriously by allocating Millions of US$ for Youth Fund and by guaranteeing allocation of 30% of all Government procurement budget for youth, women and people with physical challenges.As an institution of higher learning, we have a great responsibility to mould the youth through teaching, training, research and consultancy, thus enabling them to become innovators, entrepreneurs, managers, leaders and dependable citizens. The youth therefore have a golden opportunity to transform the World and improve their livelihoods for a better tomorrow.The youth should therefore not shy away from leadership and since the world leaderships are becoming friendlier to the youth than ever before. They should therefore focus their energies on this competitive advantage and run with it. The youth should be well aware of the challenges facing the World today including climate change so as to ensure their own children have a world to inherit.It is quite unfortunate that each day about 3,000 youths all over the world get newly infected with HIV/AIDS. The youth have the power to change these statistics to zero.Worldwide, over 73 million youths are unemployed. Your actions and voice towards this are critical. If the youth lived beyond the technology age, still the 73 million-digit can be reduced to zero. The youth do not need any special preparation to change the world or the order of things. They just need themselves and their vision. The youth have a challenge to free the World from slavery, discrimination, gender incongruence, recklessness and vanity of vanity among others.Education is a vital component for the youth of all nations. One writer, Dr. Ben Carson, in his book, The Gifted Hands, asserts that education is the greatest equalizer. He further notes that education makes the poorest of the poor to dine with the kings and queens of the World. Were it not for education, then we all could not be in this forum today.As a University College, we therefore take our responsibility to educate, disseminate knowledge, do research and carry out industrial based consultancy very seriously. We at the same time allow the youth take the central role in our mandate thus making a significant contribution to the growth of the Nation and the World at large.To support the course of the youth, my University College has impact on three major projects namely;• Modern Learning Resource Centre• Information Technology Upgrade• Institute of Co-operative DevelopmentI have details on the same for your information. The Co-operative University College of Kenya’s participation in this year’s International Co-operatives Day was at its peak with the varsity choir being atop of the entertainers. The team from the university was led by Dep. Principal AA Prof. Kamau Ngamau and director of Institute for Co-operative Development, Research and Extension Prof. E.N. Gicheru. This year’s theme is, Choose co-operatives, choose equality. The day was marked at Uhuru park grounds in Nairobi. The Chief Guest was the cabinet secretary ministry of industrialization and enterprise development Adan Mohamed. The co-operative movement in Kenya is the most vibrant in Africa and 7th best in the World, mobilising well over 30% of our GDP. It is in this recognition that last year in November, the Alliance Africa held its 11th Regional Assembly in Nairobi. The forum brought together members of the Alliance Africa, government representatives, development partners, researchers and practitioners in the co-operative sector. The focus was on the emerging business trends and how Co-operatives across the continent can respond to the changing business environment guided by the pillars of the ICA Blue Print for a Co-operative Decade 2010-2020. The co-operative way of doing business has been proven to be better and brings a more effective balance to the global economy.

The Co-operative University College of Kenya (CUCK) hereby announces its 4th graduation ceremony to be held on FRIDAY 20TH NOVEMBER, 2015 at the Main Campus (Karen) starting at 8.00 a.m. All candidates who have qualified for the award of various Certificates and Diplomas in 2014/2015 academic year are invited to attend. The Co-operative University’s Stakeholders’ forum to give final inputs on the 4-year strategic plan took place in main campus on Friday 24th May 2015. The stakeholders, among others, were drawn from the internal staff to include the University’s Management Board and Heads of Departments and Sections and also from among the students’ body represented by their Union leaders. External stakeholders included representatives from the CUCK alumni association; national co-operatives including the umbrella co-operatives body CAK, the Co-operative bank, KUSCCO, CIC insurance group, SASRA, KERUSSU, ICA Africa among others. The one day stakeholders’ workshop presided over by the CUCK Principal Prof. D. Shitanda saw the strategic plan ventilated upon to include views and reasons of all the stakeholders. Prof. Shitanda marked that as the University College geared up towards being a fully fledged University, it needed development path to travel in revamping the existing infrastructure to cater for the expected growth in terms of staff and students’ population. He noted that the CUCK is a champion in Global Co-operative trends and it must remain afloat. Key among other issues deliberated upon in the forum was the key strategic corporate objectives of the plan meant to achieve the following: (a) To Provide quality demand driven courses and programs;(b) To Promote and participate in innovative research, consultancy and dissemination of information;(c) To Transit the University College to a fully-fledged University;(d) To Strengthen linkages with the co-operative movement and other stakeholders;(e) To Strengthen The Co-operative University College of Kenya financial resource base;(f) To Strengthen governance and human resource structures;(g) To Benchmark internal processes to international standards;(h) To Develop and expand existing infrastructure; and(i) To Enhance corporate social responsibility programs for improved corporate image The strategic plan, upon its launch will provide strong support to the already vibrant co-operative industry in Kenya and world through our students, as well as by training people in the field with short-term and long term training.

The University College Council seeks to recruit suitable candidates to fill in the position of Tutorial Fellow, Grade 11, Meru Campus. Applicants should meet the following requirements:- A Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree qualification from a recognized/accredited university in the fields of Entrepreneurship, Finance & Accounting or Cooperative Management. At least three years post qualification work experience; and or Registered for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or equivalent Doctoral degree qualification; Demonstrate potential for university teaching and research.

The Co-operative University College of Kenya has awarded certificates to women participants who had taken part in a capacity training programme at the Co-operative University College in Nairobi in December last year. The women who were drawn from all the Sub Counties were taught on table banking, cooperate management among other skills. This is part of the County Government’s broad plan of empowering women at the grassroots with the necessary knowledge to enable them take part in economically viable activities. Speaking during the ceremony that took place at the Kisii Cultural Center, on 27th January 2015, Governor Ongwae thanked Prof. Gicheru, Director of CUCK’s ICDRE, for the curriculum that he said had been prepared specifically to meet the needs of the women groups’ leaders. The women were urged to sensitize their members on the available business opportunities and encourage them to engage in activities that will empower them economically. The County Commissioner thanked the women leaders for their continued support to various peace initiatives and for being peace agents in society. Governor Ongwae also noted that the Government will offer more training opportunities for women as they play a key role in development of the society.

Saturday 5th July, 2014 was it; the day over 1 billion co-operators marked with pomp and color the International Co-operatives day. In Kenya, the home of Co-operatives in Africa, co-operators from all the corners of the country converged at the  KICC to mark this important day. The theme for this year’s Ushirika day celebrations is “Co-operative Enterprises Achieve Sustainable Development for all”. The Cabinet Secretary in charge of Industrialization and Enterprise Development, the docket that houses the department of Co-operatives, Aden Mohamed graced the occasion flanked by leaders of the Co-operative movement in Kenya among the chairman of the Co-operatives Alliance of Kenya, CEO of the Co-operatives Alliance of Kenya among others. The co-operative university college of Kenya being the premier co-operative education, training and research leader in Kenya for over half a century now did join the celebration with the principal Prof. Douglas Shitanda leading them. The University choir led the entertainment crew in marking the day as the students joined thousands of co-operators in the walk for co-operatives. The University also show-cased the courses offered in an exclusive exhibition organized by the national Shirika day celebrations council at the KICC grounds.

The Co-operative University of Kenya on 11th August signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development on strategic partnership and capacity building. Speaking during the signing of the MOU, the PS MoIED Dr. Wilson Songa said this would serve as the new begging to catapult the co-operative movement in Kenya to clinch the best position globally. He noted the mandate of the Co-operative university college of Kenya was key to economic growth in training over 16,000 co-operative and Sacco societies countrywide. Dr. Songa reiterated that a sector controlling over Kshs. 500 Billion in the economy need to be run more professionally than ever before, a role he said the University College must take as an obligation. The Principal of The Co-operative University College of Kenya Prof. Douglas Shitanda marked that the co-operative movement and the university have in history worked closely and that the signing of the MOU will cement this relationship to the best. Dr. Gladys Mwiti, the chairman of the university college council reiterated the strong support from the council in supporting initiatives to strengthen the co-operative movement in the country. She remarked that this is one of the most progressive documents that will be taken seriously to rep maximum benefits from both sides of the parties. THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) is intended to set out an arrangement for establishing and maintaining a partnership between the Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development (MOIED) and the Co-operative University College of Kenya (CUCK) whose aim is the development of the Co-operative movement through training, joint activities, exchange of information, consultancy, research and related development, and any other areas that may be agreed upon from time to time. The objectives of this Memorandum of Understanding are; To provide technical expertise and co-operation in specific areas to be mutually agreed upon; To encourage sharing of information and exchange visits between CUCK lecturers and officers of the MOIED in the areas to be mutually agreed upon; To undertake joint research, innovation and development activities as and when necessary; CUCK to provide training facilities for MOIED as and when requested for local and International Government trainees on terms to be mutually agreed upon from time to time; MOIED to provide student industrial experience through internship; To work on values, andragogical model and technical assistance required by clients to rejuvenate, transform and enhance their service, profitability and sustainability; To transfer, benchmark and disseminate modern co-operative business models for best practices; To undertake value addition training and methodologies for improved productivity and income generation; To enhance Local, County, National and International networking and partnership building for the benefit of the parties and the country at large; To undertake initiatives that may influence policy formulation for the Co-operative movement.
